Filter Discs & Packs

Filter discs and screen packs are stacked or single-layer mesh elements used in plastic extrusion, rubber processing, coating lines and inline holders where contamination control protects downstream equipment. Extruder breaker plates, circular packs with spot-welded layers and custom-shaped discs must match mesh count, weave, alloy, outer diameter and hub or bolt pattern — often under tight repeatability requirements across high-volume change-outs. KAIFIL produces filter discs and laminated packs from woven mesh, with SS304 and SS316L common for polymer and chemical lines. Send plate OD, active mesh area, mesh specification per layer, layer count, retention goal and annual volume; we confirm lamination, edge condition and MOQ per quote, with unit price and lead time confirmed after full specification and layer-stack review.

Common specification problems· 01

Problems we solve before quoting.

Common specification problemsContamination breakthrough between pack layers

Layer count, weave combination and spot-weld pattern are matched to your retention target and approved against sample or trial pack.

Common specification problemsDisc outer diameter or bolt circle mismatch

OD, ID, bolt hole pattern and tab orientation are quoted to drawing — send the holder nameplate or CAD with hole coordinates.

Common specification problemsFrequent burn-through or clogging at same mesh count

We review weave (plain vs dutch), open area and whether a graded pack (coarse + fine) suits the resin or filler load — not just replicate last PO text.

Common specification problemsInconsistent pack thickness in automatic changers

Thickness tolerance and layer registration are controlled per approved first article — note automatic changer model if relevant.

Selection guide· 03

How to specify filter discs & packs.

Single disc vs multi-layer screen pack — what changes?

A single disc suits simple inline holders and some coarse duties. Extruder breaker plates and fine polymer filtration often use 2–5 layer packs with spot-welded periphery to maintain alignment under pressure and thermal cycling. Layer stack design follows retention target and approved industry patterns for your process — send current pack photo or layer list.

Extruder screen changers (manual or continuous) impose thickness and tab location limits — send changer manufacturer and model with plate drawing. Automatic systems often require tight thickness tolerance across the full pack stack.

Mesh count, weave and alloy for extrusion duty

Polymer melt filtration commonly uses dutch or reverse dutch weave in SS316L for corrosion and pore stability. Mesh count must be read together with weave — 80 mesh alone is incomplete. Note resin type, filler content, operating temperature and whether pack is reusable or sacrificial.

Graded packs may use coarse plain weave outer layers and fine dutch inner layers — list each layer mesh, weave and material rather than only final micron target. Trial packs can be quoted before annual supply contracts.

Dimensions and holder interfaces

Specify outer diameter, any inner hole or hub, bolt circle, tab slots and overall thickness after lamination. Holder brand and model help confirm fit. For non-round discs, send DXF or PDF with tolerances.

Non-circular discs (oval, slot, custom outline) require DXF or PDF with all radii dimensioned. Breaker plate hub bore and keyway must match extruder screw design — mismatches cause leak paths around the pack.

Spot welding, edge finish and cleanliness

Peripheral spot welds lock layers; edge burr condition affects sealing in some holders. Cleanliness or oil-free packaging is available when process validation requires — state this on RFQ.

Edge burr and peripheral weld nugget count affect sealing in some holders — note if your holder uses a knife edge or flat seat. Oil-free or bagged clean packs are available for medical or optical polymer lines when stated on RFQ.

What should I send for an accurate disc or pack quotation?

OD, layer list with mesh/weave/material per layer, quantity, process resin type and drawing or worn sample photo.

Reuse policy affects alloy choice: sacrificial packs may use SS304; corrosive or high-temperature lines typically specify SS316L throughout all layers. Document change control if layer stack is validated by your quality system.

MOQ, price bands and repeat supply

MOQ depends on layer count, diameter and alloy — typically lower for single discs, higher for multi-layer packs. Annual quantity and repeat schedule help lot planning; unit price confirmed per quote after spec lock.

See Extruder Screen and related family products below. Mesh layers reference Woven Wire Mesh dutch and plain families; multilayer welding beyond standard packs may route to Custom Fabrication for tooling-heavy builds.

Tooling-heavy multilayer or non-round packs may quote through Custom Fabrication when beyond standard lamination. Related blog posts on extruder filtration and mesh count help define layer stacks — send OD, layer list, resin type and holder model with your inquiry for extruder and inline holder applications.

Trial packs before annual supply help lock layer stack and thickness tolerance for automatic changers — note if your process allows a short validation run on sample quantity. Oil-free packaging, bagged sets and part-number marking per disc are available when your quality system requires traceability from pack to extruder line. Include change frequency and sacrificial vs reusable policy so alloy and layer depth match total cost of ownership.

FAQ· 05

Filter Discs & Packs questions.

Yes. Send plate OD, active filtration area, bolt pattern and layer sequence. We match existing packs from samples when available.

Send a used pack or list each layer mesh count and wire diameter. We rebuild the sequence and confirm edge binding method.

Disc packs use separate woven layers for economy and frequent change-out. Sintered discs are rigid, cleanable and suited to fine, repeatable retention.

Give the finest layer mesh or micron target plus allowable pressure drop. We propose layer counts for polymer or liquid duty.

Yes—note whether layers must be free or bonded at the edge. Spot welding helps handling on automatic changers.
